Room Lighting

Multimedia rooms are often situated near the kitchen and away from outside light. But, it will still be important to have light control within the room and rest of the house.

Technology in the projector allows you to adapt to light from other rooms. This will come in handy when you are watching the variety of shows.

If there are windows it is best to install shutters or motorized draperies over them along with a lighting control system. Even if the screen is placed on a relatively dark side of the room, light control can improve picture immensely.

A lighting control system also allows you to move back and forth between movies, playtime, and lunch and that will come in handy. It is even possible to have a single button control system installed to change light intensity in your living room.

Sound

In a multimedia room, sound equipment should be a priority. But you'll have to balance your desire for quality sound with the need for space for this is a high traffic room.

One option is to use a satellite speaker system. This size of front and center speakers are such that they can be mounted on the wall, and the larger subwoofer can be placed in a corner keeping it out of the way and still provide quality sound for whatever you are watching.

Another option is to buy larger, floor-standing speakers that provide some of the most cutting edge sound. The best sound will require a greater number of large speakers and consequently more space. You can place the speakers in a cabinet or build a dedicated closet for them. While not saving space this will protect the speakers. Some speakers, no matter their size, can be mounted on the wall, although may look awkward in a room like this.

The final option is to not worry about traffic and space. If you have the room and prefer the best sound, regardless of how many people there are, you can place your speakers all over the room.

Also pay attention to room acoustics as they are important to optimize sound. The surfaces of your room's walls, ceiling and floor play a large part in a sound quality. For instance, hard surfaces like glass, hardwood, or stone can muffle sound while uneven surfaces like carpeting, drapery and other furnishings can help improve it.

Furniture

After you decide on the equipment, it is time to consider the furniture arrangement. The arrangement will include screen, projector, speakers, couches/seats, and possibly an equipment storage unit. Some rooms include furniture that was specifically designed for audio and video equipment.

In the multimedia room the furniture arrangement will be as versatile as the room. Where the couches/seats go will influence the best position for each speaker, and the arrangement of the seats and speakers dictate the flow of traffic. Remember if you are going to have dedicated storage, it is best to keep it out of the way from viewing.

Your multimedia room is simply being upgraded. This room has always been popular in your house and a home theater will simply increase usability and enjoyment. That means more people with more equipment, so plan accordingly.
